Daniel Noboa is reported to the Prosecutor’s Office in Mexico for the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito – Caretas

MADRID, Apr 29. (EUROPE PRESS) –

Lawyers from civil society and researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) have filed a criminal complaint this Sunday before the General Prosecutor’s Office of Mexico against the President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, for the police raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, where security forces detained former Vice President Jorge Glas.

The plaintiffs believe that Noboa “should be investigated and punished for ordering the raid on the diplomatic headquarters, for the violence exercised against the Embassy officials, for the deprivation of liberty and the kidnapping of Glas, who was seeking asylum, as well as for injuries and illegal detentions against Mexican officials, espionage and harassment against the headquarters, and for the damages caused.”

In this regard, they have indicated that the Prosecutor’s Office is responsible for investigating allegedly illicit acts, since the Federal Penal Code establishes that crimes committed by Mexicans or foreigners in embassies and delegations are considered executed on national territory,” as reported by the newspaper ‘La Jornada’.

The Public Ministry is empowered to prosecute, process, and punish the alleged perpetrators of crimes typified in the Federal Code and in the applicable instruments of International Law, whether committed on its territory or against its citizens.

Furthermore, they have pointed out the existence of other possible foreseen crimes, such as riot, international terrorism, criminal association, trespassing, assault, injuries, illegal deprivation of liberty, and damage to others’ property. However, they believe that crimes against humanity, torture, and imprisonment in violation of fundamental norms of International Law were committed.

The Ecuadorian Police entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito in mid-month, where former Vice President Glas had been staying for weeks, claiming fear for his security. Mexico had confirmed shortly before the police operation that it would provide political asylum to the former ‘number two’ of President Rafael Correa.

Ecuadorian authorities accuse the former Vice President of an alleged misappropriation of public funds for reconstruction work in the Manabí province following a strong earthquake in 2016, which left more than 670 dead.
